Once the Affordable Care Act was enacted it was clear EMR was the new normal. Our group elected to get moving on the tedious task of finding the best platform to suit our 10 site ambulatory surgery center model. The goals were clear — user friendly, adaptable for many different platforms interfaces, and having excellent revenue cycle functionality. We have been up and running for about three years and customized the programs to maximize our medical and back office business practices. The interfaces with the ASC’s scheduling and demographic data allowed us to optimize our administrative staff size and function. The coding function afforded our revenue cycle folks the opportunity to use far fewer staff for registration and coding. The EMR component creates a legible and accurate OR record, as well as documents the PQRS and AQI drivers to conform with the various regulatory and payer rules and regulations. The value was really elucidated when the most technology challenged docs and anesthetists not only embraced it, but began to complain when working at some newer sites that initially were still on “paper”.
